Glass Storage Containers
Glass Storage Containers -
A Convenient Option That Helps Save The Environment, And Your Health
If you’re anything like me, you have cupboards full of old plastic storage containers. They’re stained, scratched and are either missing lids, or have lids that are warped from reheating. And even though they’re in rough shape, we hang on to them because…well, we need them to store food! If you’re reading this, you know that glass storage containers are much more convenient and longer-lasting than your old plastic ones. But did you also know they are safer, both for the environment and for your health? Keep reading to discover why.
When you reheat food in a plastic container, like in the microwave, you’re at risk of some of the materials used in the plastic leaching out into your food…and then eating it. Meats, cheeses and other fat-containing foods are particularly prone to this, as they causes a chemical named diethylhexyl adipate to be absorbed out of the plastic.
The FDA regulates this, to an extent, by testing and regulating plastic food containers and has put a ‘microwave safe’ label on containers that leach out what they’ve determined to be a ‘safe’ amount of chemicals. But what, really, is a safe amount? Isn’t none better than some?
Also, plastic manufacturing is not only a source of pollution, but of non-biodegradable waste. Plastic bags take a thousand years to break down…imagine how long it would take a plastic container?
Glass food containers have become the most popular choice for health-conscious people who want to reduce their waste while at the same time take advantage of cost-effective, convenient food storage solutions. For obvious reasons, glass containers have no limit on the amount of times they can be re-used…unless you break them, they’ll last forever! And of course, they can be used without risk of chemical exposure. But there are other, more practical benefits to glass storage containers:
-They save you time. Glass containers can go from the freezer to the fridge to the oven, so you don’t have to use several different dishes just to store and eat one item!
-They save you money. Glass containers don’t stain or scratch, so you don’t need to replace them as often as you do plastic containers.
-They look nicer. Glass containers come in all shapes and sizes, and the larger ones can go right to the dinner table and actually fit in with your other dishes. And since glass doesn’t absorb odor, they’ll smell better too!
If you’re making the move from plastic to glass, there are some things to consider. Glass storage containers are pricier than plastic (but well worth it), so you may find it easier to replace one or two pieces at a time rather than getting an entire set at once. Think about what foods you tend to store most, and buy a few containers that will work well for them.
Also, look at lids. There are glass lidded containers available, but these tend to be really spendy. You can find glass containers with plastic lids at most stores for a much more affordable price. Just be sure to remove the lids for reheating, as they can warp.
Now you know why glass storage containers are a better choice than plastic…so go on out and start your collection! You’ll be glad you did.
